One discrete lesson of spelling is taught every week. During this lesson, children will be introduced to a specific GPC, spelling rule/pattern or letter string. They will then be given opportunities to investigate and apply this rule through a range of activities that will deepen their understanding. Children will be given a spelling homework task, which will include a word list to be learned in preparation for a weekly spelling test. It is vital that children are given opportunities to explore and investigate spelling rules; this is a far more effective way of improving children’s spelling than just providing lists of words to be learned ‘by rote’.
We use the Rising Stars spelling lists for Y1 – Y6. These provide coverage of all the statutory spelling objectives set out in the National Curriculum. A long-term plan for Y1 – Y6 is available below.
